AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
ILLINOIS DIVISION - RELAY FOR LIFE
TEAM MEMBER FUND RAISING BULLET POINTS

When conducting a project for the American Cancer Society, please adhere to the following guidelines. It is the responsibility of the Relay Team Captain to share this information with all team members.

  1. A fundraiser with expenses:

  1. Notify the Team Recruitment Chair of the Fundraiser.

  2. Try to get goods donated.

  3. Cash generated in sales can be used to reimburse for purchase of goods.

  4. You will not be able to request money from ACS to reimburse for purchase of goods.

  5. Reimbursement from the ACS for purchase of goods used for team fundraisers will not be permitted.

  6. Teams may not charge goods under the ACS name.

  1. No bank accounts can be opened under the American Cancer Society (ACS) name.

  2. Relay fundraising teams are not allowed to use the ACS Illinois State Sales Tax-Exempt or Federal Employer Identification numbers in purchasing materials/supplies.

  3. Contact ACS office if you are going to reprint ACS name and/or logo on any promotion.

  4. The ACS will provide acknowledgement letters for items donated to the event. However, you must re responsible for forwarding the donor’s name, address, phone number, and the description of the gift to the ACS within 2 weeks after your project. The acknowledgement letter from the ACS will state the description, not the value, of the donated item.

  5. The ACS cannot be responsible for insurance coverage liability or liquor licensing for any outside sponsored event.

  6. Contact the staff of your local city government and/or the ACS office for guidance if considering a raffle. Raffles are NOT tax deductible.

  7. The ACS requests that teams carefully consider their fund raising efforts. During the planning of any event, ask these questions:

  1. Is it ethical?

  2. Is it offensive to any group?

  3. What is the financial risk/outcome?

  4. Do we have unanswered questions or any doubt? Call your local ACS office.

The American Cancer Society appreciates the hard work and effort put into raising dollars for their mission. However, the name and reputation of the American Cancer Society is more important than any funds raised.
